Cambridge win Varsity Rock’n'Roll

May 2nd, 2009

After an absence from last year’s Varsity DanceSport match held in Oxford, the CURnR team made sure Rock’n'Roll featured in this year’s Varsity match. While Oxford did enter a competent couple for the first time in a long while, Cambridge couples Claude & Emily took first place, with Barny & Jenny in 2nd place. Full results can be found on our competitions page.

Oxford are trying to set up a Rock’n'Roll team (initiated by two ex-CURnR team members), so hopefully next year’s Varsity match will be a closer competition between the universities!

Cuppers Results

March 7th, 2009

As well as competing against other universities, almost all sports in Cambridge have an intra-university competition, called Cuppers. For the Rock’n'Roll team, this is an opportunity for team members to be judged by proper Continental Rock’n'Roll judges (as opposed to the ballroom judges at Varsity-circuit competitions). We’re grateful to this year’s 4 judges: long-standing CURnR coaches Guido & Cristina, new team coach Stefan Turok, and ex-CURnR captain Maurice Ringer.

Acrobatic Results:

  1. Claude & Emily
  2. Barny & Jenny
  3. Sam & Natasha
  4. Adrian & Chrissie
  5. Ian & Hannah

Footwork Results:

  1. Claude & Emily
  2. Adrian & Chrissie
  3. Ian & Hannah
  4. Jay & Emma
  5. Barny & Jenny

Congratulations to Claude & Emily, Adrian & Chrissie, Barny & Jenny, Sam & Natasha, Alex & Alex, and Mark & Zara.

Double Victory at SUDC

February 14th, 2009

Cambridge couples were victorious in both the footwork and acrobatic rounds at the Southern University DanceSport Competition.

Congratulations to Claude & Emily for winning the footwork competition, and to Sam & Natasha for winning the acrobatic competition (especially as it was Natasha’s first competition). Full results can be found on our competitions page.

Rave Reviews for Rock’n'Roll in “Beauty”

January 27th, 2009

The Rock’n'Roll Team performed two routines in the CUCDW Dance Show “Beauty”, at the ADC Theatre. Both student newspapers, The Cambridge Student and Varsity highlighted the Rock’n'Roll team as the highlight of the show, mentioning our energy and extreme gravity-defying acrobatic lifts. Videos of the two routines are now on the videos page.

Classes start again on Tuesday 13th

January 11th, 2009

Rock’n'Roll classes start again for Lent Term this Tuesday 13th of January. Tuesdays will be similar to last term, but check below for slight changes in timing and location. The Tuesday classes are open to complete beginners, but people who came last term will also be able to learn new stuff – the first week or two will help refresh the basic step and simple moves.

The timetable is as follows:
-Authentic, 6:45-7:45pm, Parkside Hall
-Continental 8-9pm, Parkside Gym
-Acrobatic, 9-10pm, Parkside Gym

For those of you who attended classes last term, please note the slight changes to the timing and venue of the Continental and Acrobatic classes.

In addition to these, we are running a Continental Improvers class, run by new coach Stefan, on Wednesday, 7-8pm in Parkside Hall – this class is suitable for those who have done a term or more of the Continental classes, and want to continue improving their kick-ball-change and learn some sharp choreography.

All details about times, venues, prices etc. can be found on the CDC website:

Team Trials

November 3rd, 2008

Team Trials: Tuesday 4th November, during Continental/Acro classes.

Trials for people interested in joining the CURnR Team will be taking place during this Tuesday’s classes. They’ll be pretty informal, and you’ll get a chance to learn and practise a few moves during the Continental and Acro classes. Don’t worry about needing a partner, there’ll be plenty of keen people taking part, and team members are always happy to help out!
